Gold IRA Rollover Fees: How to Compare Custody, Storage and Dealer Costs

Gold IRA Rollover Fees: How to Compare Custody, Storage and Dealer Costs

A gold IRA rollover has no single universal price. Compare the dealer’s purchase price, annual custody and storage charges, and the amount you would receive when selling. A “free rollover” can still involve substantial investment costs.

What are you actually paying for?

A physical-gold IRA generally involves separate jobs: a dealer sells the metal, a custodian administers the retirement account, and a depository stores it. One business may introduce the others, but that does not mean one advertised fee covers every service. Ask which company receives each payment and who is responsible if something goes wrong.

IRS rules generally treat metals as collectibles, with specific exceptions for qualifying coins and bullion. Certain bullion must be in the physical possession of a bank or IRS-approved nonbank trustee. Do not assume an IRA-owned LLC makes home storage acceptable. The custodian may also impose its own investment restrictions. See the IRS IRA FAQs.

The gold IRA fee checklist

Request an itemized written quote covering these costs before moving money:

Account opening: Any establishment, application or transfer fee. Ask whether a promotion merely postpones it.

Annual administration: Custody, recordkeeping and account-maintenance charges. Check minimum fees, account-value tiers and charges after the introductory year.

Storage and insurance: The depository charge, whether insurance is included, coverage limits, and whether storage is segregated or commingled. Obtain the actual contract rather than relying on a sales description.

Buying and selling: The premium above the metal’s reference value and the dealer’s buyback price. Ask for both prices for the identical item at the same time. A low annual account fee does not compensate automatically for an expensive purchase price.

Other charges: Wires, shipping, transactions, distributions, account closure and transferring to another provider. Ask which charges are fixed and which increase with your account balance.

A worked example: why the spread matters

This is a hypothetical illustration, not a provider quote, typical fee claim or gold-price forecast. Suppose you start with $25,000, pay $100 to open the account and $200 for the first year of custody and storage. That leaves $24,700 to purchase metal.

If the dealer charges 5% above the metal’s underlying value, your $24,700 buys approximately $23,523.81 of metal value ($24,700 ÷ 1.05). If the dealer would immediately buy it back at 98% of that value, proceeds would be approximately $23,053.33 before exit charges.

With the gold price unchanged, the difference from your original $25,000 is approximately $1,946.67, or 7.79%. Future annual fees would add further costs. The lesson is to compare the complete purchase-to-sale journey, not just the opening fee.

How to compare three offers fairly

Give each provider the same proposed account size and ask for the same eligible coin or bar, weight, quantity and storage arrangement. Request a dated total purchase price, all first-year charges, renewal charges, and an immediate buyback quote. Ask how long the quote remains valid and whether any promotional benefit has conditions or a clawback.

The CFTC and FINRA precious-metals checklist explains why spot price, dealer spreads and written costs matter. A custodian statement’s valuation should not be treated as a guaranteed resale offer. Keep copies of quotes, contracts and cancellation terms.

Transfer or rollover: check the route before moving money

Moving an IRA directly between trustees is different from receiving retirement money yourself and redepositing it. An employer-plan direct rollover is another route. If a distribution is paid to you, deadlines, withholding and rollover restrictions can matter; a missed requirement may create a taxable distribution.

Ask the current plan administrator and receiving custodian which method applies before requesting a withdrawal. Consult the IRS rollover guidance and a qualified tax adviser for your circumstances. Do not assume every retirement-plan balance can be moved immediately.

Does lower cost make gold suitable?

No. Physical gold does not pay interest or dividends, its price can fall, and ongoing fees reduce returns. Concentrating retirement savings in one asset creates additional risk. A competitive quote answers a cost question; it does not establish that the investment fits your goals. The CFTC’s precious-metals guidance discusses volatility and misleading sales practices.

A self-directed IRA custodian is not automatically evaluating the merits of your chosen investment. The SEC’s self-directed IRA investor alert explains the limits of custodian oversight. Independently check the provider and avoid pressure to act before reviewing documents.

Before you decide

Get the full written costs, compare identical metal across providers, understand the exit price, and confirm the tax-compliant transfer route. If a salesperson cannot explain how the fees and resale quote work together, pause rather than treating a promotion as a deadline.
